What is a Weld Neck Flange?
A weld neck flange has a long tapered hub welded to the pipe. The design provides strong, leak-proof joints and transfers stress evenly, making it suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature systems. Because they provide robust joints they are used where a consistent seal is mandated or where the piping may be exposed to stressed environments.
What is a Long Weld Neck Flange?
A long weld neck flange extends the hub length of a standard weld neck. It often replaces a short pipe piece and is commonly used as a nozzle on pressure vessels and tanks. The longer neck adds structural support, reduces stress, and improves flow alignment.
Materials
Material Grades Key Features Applications
| Material | Grades | Key Features | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel | ASTM A105 | Strong, durable, cost-effective | General service, oil & gas, high-pressure piping |
| Alloy Steel | Various | High temperature & pressure use | Power plants, refineries, high-stress environments |
| Stainless Steel | 304, 316 | Corrosion resistance | Chemical, food processing, marine applications |
| Duplex Stainless Steel | 2205 | Strength + chloride resistance | Offshore, marine, and aggressive environments |
| Nickel Alloys | Inconel, etc | Extreme heat & chemical resistance | Aggressive chemicals, high-temperature service |
Advantages of Weldneck Flanges
Limitations of Weldneck Flanges
- Higher cost due to more material and machining
- Complex installation requiring skilled welding
- Bulkier design, harder to transport and handle
- Longer lead times for custom sizes or special alloys
